There are two main ways of getting to Santa Maria:

1. Flying to Lisbon (airport code: LIS) or Porto (OPO) - perhaps with one of the numerous low-cost airlines such as Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) - and on from there with the Azorean airline SATA (www.sata.pt) via Ponta Delgada (PDL) to Santa Maria (SMA). On Thursdays there is also a direct flight from Lisbon to Santa Maria.

2. At present, direct flights to Ponta Delgada (PDL) on the main island, from where SATA flies the short distance to Santa Maria (SMA) several times a day, are available from the following countries:
Austria: from Vienna, operated by Air Berlin (all year round; www.airberlin.com)
Finland: from Helsinki, by Finnair (all year round; www.finnair.com)
Germany: from Berlin (Tegel), Dortmund, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Erfurt, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne/Bonn, Leipzig/Halle, Munich, Münster/Osnabrück, Nuremberg, Paderborn/Lippstadt, by Air Berlin (all year round; www.airberlin.com)
from Frankfurt (all year round), and Munich (from April to October), by SATA
Great Britain: from London and Manchester, by SATA (all year round)
The Netherlands: from Amsterdam, by SATA (from May to October)
Norway: from Oslo and Stavanger, by Sterling European Airlines / Braathens (all year round; www.solia.no)
Spain: from Madrid, by SATA (from June to September)
Sweden: from Gothenburg, Malmo, and Stockholm, by Sterling European Airlines (all year round; www.solresor.se)
Switzerland: from Zurich, by SATA (from April to October)
